Community Support for Golda Meir House Expansion

JCHE is proposing to add 69 affordable apartments to our 199-apartment Golda Meir House. Our new residents will join the Golda community and benefit from Golda's amazing programs and services

Public support from Newton residents will greatly increase our chances of success through our next two milestones: securing $3.25 million in funding from the Newton Community Preservation Committee (CPC) and a Comprehensive Permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA).

Please sign this petition to show the Zoning Board of Appeals and Community Preservation Committee that you want to see more affordable housing in Newton and that you support JCHE's proposal.

Suggestions for "Why is this Important to You?"

The Newton community is facing high housing prices and a shortage of affordable, supported housing options for seniors. According to "Newton Leads 2040" (June 2016), over 5,000 households in Newton are cost-burdened by housing. Meanwhile, Newton's older population is growing. According to UMass Boston's January 2018 report "Newton Older Adults," 17% of Newton residents are over 65 and this is projected to increase to 24% by 2030. Of these community members over 65, 27.7% live alone and 8.5% have an income below the poverty level. JCHE's services and supports can help residents combat loneliness, isolation, and the stress of navigating care decisions.

Update #25 years ago
Thank you again to everyone for your support over the last several months! The petition will remain open in 2019 because community support will continue to be critical as we pursue state funding and work towards breaking ground. Please share this page with any friends or family in Newton who haven't already signed.
Update #15 years ago
We are thrilled to share that the Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved our Comp. Permit, and City Council approved our $3.25 million proposal for Community Preservation Act funds. We are significantly closer to serving more older adults and chronically homeless individuals in Golda's vibrant community, and your signatures and thoughtful comments were instrumental. THANK YOU.
