Trump has agreed to sign the spending bill that would keep the government open — but with a major caveat. In order to placate his far-right base and sycophants at Fox News, he has signaled that he will simultaneously declare a national emergency to bypass Congress and siphon funds from other government programs to build his wall on the southern border.
Trump hopes to divert upwards of $8 billion for "barrier" construction, despite the fact that Congress only agreed to allocate approximately $1.3 billion. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has indicated that Democrats will fight the declaration in court. Even Trump's own Department of Justice has warned the White House that the declaration will likely be blocked by the courts.
Trump's national emergency declaration is not only completely unfounded, as illegal border crossings have been steadily declining for decades, but the intent is clearly political.
Trump is acting in the interest of the likes of Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter, who skewered the president as he seemed poised to sign a continuing resolution without border funding before the last shutdown. Trump is merely trying to save face so he'll get positive coverage from him most extreme admirers.
Pelosi has also warned that this move will set a precedent that Republicans will come to regret, as the next Democratic president could theoretically declare national emergencies for (actual) emergencies like gun violence and climate change.
We, the undersigned, demand that Congressional Republicans and the White House put an immediate end to this phony national emergency. This move is that of a dictator, and his party must act immediately to restore Americans' faith in our democracy.
