Changing Grade Point Weighting System at East Lyme High School

  • recipient: East Lyme Niantic Salem Parents and Students, East Lyme, CT

A petition by the Parents and Students of East Lyme addressed to Jeff Newton, Superintendent of East Lyme Schools, Michael Susi, Principal of East Lyme High School (ELHS) and the East Lyme Board of Education.
In 2011, ELHS adopted the current grade weighting policy which made two major adjustments. First, the 'B' Level classes become the baseline for all grades and 'A' level, Honors and AP would be weighted up from the 'B' Level baseline. And, two, it changed the weighting of Honors/AP classes to a much lower weighting (10%/15% respectively) from the previous methodology. The old scale had weighted slightly higher values for ELHS Honor/AP classes than other schools in the state.
While the new methodology corrected the challenges ELHS had for the 'B' Level classes, it overcorrected the weighting for Honors/AP Classes. The ELHS current methodology weights Honors/AP classes much lower than many of our Peer High Schools in Connecticut and much lower than the most widely used methodology used throughout the Northeast.

** This petition proposes that the EL BoE moves quickly to change the grade weighting system so that our next graduating class is not at a competitive disadvantage when applying to colleges and for scholarships.
** This petition recommends the EL BoE increases the grade weighting of Honor classes by +0.5 (3.0 becomes 3.5) and AP classes by +1.0 (3.0 becomes 4.0). These new proposed values appear to be the most widely used methodology at high schools.

Update #36 years ago
On Feb. 26, the East Lyme Board of Education decided to reject this petition's two action items. The EL BoE has no intentions to modify the existing GPA values. Instead, the Board will fine-tune and edit the ELHS Strategic School Profile Report which is a document utilized by college admissions departments.
Thanks for all your support and insightful comments regarding changing the ELHS grade point weighting system.
