Your Signature Can Help Save THEATERLAB From Closing

Dear Friends of Theaterlab,

Theaterlab is in danger of being shut down by our landlord.

If you value the performances, beautiful spaces, and artistic & intellectual community provided by Theaterlab, YOU CAN HELP US STAY at 137 West 14th Street with just a signature!

PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION to encourage our landlord to let us stay. And perhaps say a few words about your positive experiences at Theaterlab.

THE STORY:

Even though we have four years left on our lease, our landlord has been showing the building to prospective new tenants. We are current on our rent payments and have maintained a good relationship with the building and landlord, but are nonetheless facing either eviction or a “buy-out,” due to technicalities in the lease which we feel powerless to fight without going to court.

HOWEVER, our landlord has expressed some ambivalence about following through with his plan. He has always been very supportive of Theaterlab, but by his current actions appears to be doubting Theaterlab’s worth. YOUR VOICE OF SUPPORT COULD TIP THE BALANCE IN OUR FAVOR.

Theaterlab is now in its 7th year of offering affordable rehearsal and performance space to emerging theatre groups, performance artists & dancers, jazz & experimental musicians, photographers & fashion designers, etc. We are one of the few remaining organizations who serve an extended community of artists who are already experiencing a rapidly depleting landscape of affordable rehearsal and performance space in New York City.

We are proud of what we have accomplished and we are proud of our partnership with all the artists who pass through Theaterlab.

Theaterlab is an artist-run working space for artists. We have carefully built our organization to be grassroots, attentive and respectful to the artists who work here, and not overly administrated, in order to provide affordable space in Manhattan. We believe it is a great model and example of a sustainable arts service organization in these difficult economic times.

Thank you all so much for your continued interest and support,

Carlo Altomare

Dear Mr. Gutierrez,

It is my understanding that you are weighing the possiblitiy of replacing Theaterlab with a different tenant at 137 W 14th St.

I am writing to encourage you let Theaterlab continue its lease and to support its excellent work and invaluable service to the community of emerging performing artists in New York City.

Theaterlab has accomplished a minor miracle in these difficult financial times by offering affordable space for project development and performance to emerging artists in NYC.

And frankly, we love the space. How its organized, maintained, etc. And especially the respect that is paid to the artists who work there.

These signatures represent the far reaching community of artists who both appreciate and benefit from Theaterlab and its excellent record of programming and service. We hope you will recognize that your decision regarding Theaterlab affects us all.

Thanks for your thoughtful consideration,
