Toxic Tire Mulch Removal

The recycled rubber tire mulch used under the play structures in our parks throughout Cloverdale has been linked to many health and environmental hazards. Toxic levels of lead have been found by independent studies. See related article from the DC area. The material emits potentially  carcinogenic fumes during hot weather conditions. Prolonged daily exposure has been linked to leukemia and lymphoma. The EPA is continuing their research, but recommends avoiding prolonged contact with the hands, face, and mouth. They recommend that children wash their hands thoroughly after coming in contact with this material. They urge the public to avoid eating or drinking while directly on the surfaces. They advise parents to wash any toys that come in contact with the material as well as change clothing that has come in contact with the material. There are several other hazards related to fires and fire safety. We have started this petition to urge the City Council to in act plans to:

1) inform the public about the hazards with warnings and signage at the parks

2) provide funding and man power to remove the material from our parks

3) research and fund a replacement material which is safer and healthier

We, the undersigned, call on the Cloverdale City Council to remove and replace the recycled rubber tire mulch in our parks.

Update #24 years ago
Toxic playgrounds still at risk! Thank you for supporting our effort to remove the toxic tires from the Cloverdale playgrounds. It seemed the city was making progress on the project with a unanimous vote to remove it, but recently the Vice Mayor struck it from the agenda and declared the mulch was safe. There will be a demonstration organized at a city council meeting soon. We'll keep you posted. Here's a short, informative video about the dangers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmIchJtAhK8
