Pass Animal Welfare Laws in Egypt

In 2015, Egypt was a buzz with anger over the video of three men beating and stabbing a restrained dog in front of his owner. After several minutes of torture, one of the men steps up to kill the dog by smacking the dog's head and body with a metal pole until it lay still in a pool of its own blood. The incident became known as Dog al-Ahram and brought to light the serious dearth of animal welfare laws in the Arab republic.

After uproar on social media, the men were arrested and were given a sentence of three years in prison but within months the sentences were reduced to just months. Clearly, justice was not served.

Now, nearly 3 years later some Egyptians are demanding the country adopt its first animal welfare law. Among other things, the law would prohibit the murder of stray animals, create animal humane animal transport provisions, regulate the use of animal testing and put controls on the treatment of animals in slaughterhouses. In short, it is a huge step forward for one of the oldest civilizations which, until now, has very little mention of animal rights in their legal statutes.

Egypt, like other developing countries is not known for their good treatment of animals, and they have even suffered economically for it. Australia, for example, banned exports of livestock to Egypt on several occasions after video of animals being cruelly slaughtered in Egyptian facilities. They only resumed when protocols were put in place that would ensure Australian standards.

While some believe Egypt has more pressing issues, the protection of animals is not a luxury. Animals, like people, should enjoy basic welfare and humane treatment and should be respected.

Activists hope Egypt will adopt the new animal welfare law next year. As Care2, with the backing of animal rights supporters like you all over the world, let's help encourage them to do so and ensure animals can have a better life in Egypt. Please sign the petition and ask the Egyptian Parliament to pass real animal welfare.
