Don't let sadistic killers massacre hundreds of animals at Ukrainian shelter

Animal Shelter SOS, one of the largest sanctuaries for stray dogs and cats in Ukraine's capital Kyiv, is at risk of being burnt down by armed thugs.

The Shelter, in a quiet neighbourhood on the outskirts of Kyiv, was once a place where sadistic animal hunters rounded up stray dogs and cats and murdered them in unspeakable ways. Tamara Tarnawska, a former journalist, exposed the activities in her documentary film in 1997, leading to Kyiv authorities shutting the facility down. She then turned the place into a sanctuary for strays and has since saved more than 20,000 dogs and cats from starvation, poisoning and violent physical abuse. Her work has received international recognition and the sanctuary still provides a safe haven today for hundreds of sweet, blameless dogs and cats, young and old.

Sadly, the Shelter regularly receives online abuse and physical harassment from twisted animal hunters with various agenda, including land grab. Armed men are now turning up at the gate in the middle of the night with threats to burn down the compound and kill the animals. The stakes have been raised and some staff have left in fear. With desperately stretched resources and almost non-existent site security, the Shelter is no longer safe. It is only a matter of time before the walls are scaled and breached.

Basic Animal Rights laws exist in Ukraine (which the founder of Animal Shelter SOS helped author) but they are not observed. The police are not interested and even accuse the Shelter of wasting their time. This is simply unacceptable in a European country in the 21st century. The government must act to protect the hundreds of innocent lives in the Shelter. The police must arrest those who threaten to carry out mass murder. The prosecutor's office must enforce the law to charge those who think they can violently abuse and take lives without consequences.

Update #14 years ago
Thank you for supporting our Shelter. Sadly the situation here is deteriorating rapidly. 3 nights ago, unknown men turned up and started banging on the door/ shining lights into the Shelter. At 3am yesterday shots were fired into the staff's accommodation. Fortunately our colleagues were unharmed. We desperately need to raise funds to pay for security and for a lawyer. We are grateful for any support and any donations (link in petition). Get in touch if you can help in any other ways. God bless.
