While my son does not have any learning disabilities (fortunately), there are many children today that are born with learning disabilities (Downs Syndrome, Autism etc.) and it has been proven that teaching ASL (American Sign Language) to children from the time of their birth on, enables them (the children) to learn to communicate better and quicker.
The odds are that each of us knows at least one individual with a learning disability. While I have witnessed educational programming include such things as children with disabilities (using crutches, wheel chairs, or other learning aids) I would like to see basic ASL (mom, dad, please, thank you, sorry etc.) included in children's programs such as Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood and Sesame Street.
I have elected to teach my son ASL as a primary second language, as the odds are that he will know at least one other child in his lifetime that has a learning disability. In addition it has been proven that teaching ASL helps to foster better and quicker learning in children. At the same time teaching ASL helps to foster tolerance and understanding in our children that while we are not all alike we all can learn given the opportunity.
