Attention Merritt Island Home Owners: On April 24th, 2018, Brevard County Commissioners will vote to accept one of two proposal to relocate all the muck dredged from Sykes Creek. Although the plan to remove the muck is a good one that will help the marine environment going forward, the county wants to move the muck and salty water to an already flood prone area of North Merritt Island off of East Crisafulli Road! Many homes and land parcels north of the Barge Canal already flood with bad rains and this isn't even taking hurricanes into consideration. So this is a huge concern to residents on this end of the island. The county has two proposals. Their preferred proposal is to transport (pump) the muck consisting of 85% saltwater and 15% muck through pipes laid out over 8.5 miles north to a proposed land site right next to residential houses on East Crisafulli Road in North Merritt Island. Here are the important reasons to sign this petition and HELP STOP THIS DECISION: Their will be 5 noisy diesel pumps, running 24/7, along the way to move the water and muck. The 642,000 cubic yards of muck also comes along with millions of gallons of salt water being dumped into a 60+ acre burmed area which will be created to hold the muck. Then all the "millions" of gallons of water will be treated in a way that we, the public, currently have no knowledge of. And then those millions of gallons will be pumped back into small local canals that lead to the Indian River Lagoon again. The problem is, these local small canals overflow with heavy rains onto peoples land and into their houses even when the county turns on their pumps and tries to help. All this additional water will surely cause more homes and yards to flood, especially during the rainy season. We are talking about people's homes, livestock and landscaped yards being destroyed. On top of the risk of flooding out more homes in this area, this proposed muck dump site may contain endangered animals such as scrub jays, Florida panthers and gopher turtles. FYI...The residents of North Merritt Island have been paying extra taxes to have the county come up with a better plan to reduce major flooding in our area and now they are considering a plan to pump more water into our area!!
