Hong Kong Must Put a Ban on Plastic Bags

Despite the Hong Kong government's efforts to encourage the use of reusable bags buy putting a charge on single-use plastic bags, many continue to consume countless bags each day!

Many know that plastic bags never break down, but are you aware of the threat it imposes on marine life and birds? When plastic breaks down into micro plastics and is consumed by sea animals and birds, it engenders fatalities as a result of ingestion, starvation, suffocation, infection, drowning, and entanglement.

Furthermore, 99% of plastic is produced by the use of fossil fuels–one of the primary causes of climate change. Another negative impact of single-use plastic is that the toxic chemicals use to manufacture these plastics contaminate soil and water when left in landfills as well.

Last but not least, when these toxic chemicals chemicals used to make plastic are ingested by animals such as fish, they enter the food chain which can then affect our health as well.

One step that would drastically cut down Hong Kong's plastic consumption even more so than the charging of them, would be to ultimately ban them and replace them with paper bags. This would also further urge customers to reuse and bring their own! Thank you.
