Do Not Cut Food Assistance For Struggling Families During A Pandemic

  • by: Care2 Team

Right now, nearly 24 million American adults do not have enough to eat. With COVID-19 continuing to ravage the U.S, that number is expected to swell to 54 million, including 18 million children.

Over the last 4 years, the Trump administration has conducted an all-out assault on food assistance programs in an attempt to slash the number of struggling and deserving Americans eligible for help.

They've even attacked one of our country's bedrock assistance programs -- the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Their proposed "categorical eligibility" rule would cut nutrition assistance for households with savings and other assets. If enacted, officials estimate this step alone would cut benefits to 3 million people and impede automatic access to free school meals for nearly 1 million children.

With so many Americans struggling, we can not let the Trump administration's legacy of cruelty go unchallenged. That's why we must take this opportunity to encourage the incoming Biden-Harris administration to halt Trump's proposals and instead expand critical programs including SNAP and WIC, which serves pregnant women, infants, and children.

Food insecurity is at unprecedented levels. Sign the petition and urge the Biden-Harris administration to immediately stop and roll back the prior administration's outrageous and cruel attacks on food assistance programs.
