As local restaurants shut down, online food delivery services are set to soar. The UK Online food delivery service already stands at £4,215 million. Coronavirus has already created increased demand for food deliveries and therefore increased profits.
All the while NHS workers across the country are working untenable hours, at risk of exhaustion contamination and even death – just to keep us safe. Retired staff and student nurses are working FOR FREE. We've seen the video of the nurse crying because she can't find anything at the supermarket. We've seen them asking us to stay at home so they can save lives. Now it's time we give back.
We're calling on delivery giants Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat to enable free meals/snacks for NHS workers throughout this pandemic with this very simple method:
1️⃣ When someone orders a takeaway, an option is included to 'add a meal/snack for an NHS worker to my order'. This will allow you to select a meal or snack of any value to be donated. The price will be added to your order total.
2️⃣ Requests for NHS meal are saved by Deliveroo/Uber Eats/Just Eat and added to a directory on their website showing the meals/snacks bought for them in their area and what they are.
3️⃣ NHS workers can order and redeem by inputting their NHS staff number or uploading a picture of their badge. Deliveroo/Uber Eats/Just Eat put in the order for them and collect.
4️⃣ Meals are delivered to a hospital or home drop off points with no contact.
This initiative would:
- Supply NHS workers with meals for free.
- Support local food businesses while costing them nothing.
- Be an optional way (for those who can afford a takeaway) to give back to our key workers.
It's important that the requests for these meals do not damage local food businesses incomes, so we are asking Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat to donate and buy a set number of meals for workers to kick off this initiative from the profits they are currently experiencing.
A donation of £2000 could buy 200 meals.
Let's back our NHS and show them we care by buying #mealsforheroes.
