I live in Maine Township in Des Plaines il. I have lived here for over 20 years during this time I have seen many changes and recently I have seen no changes to help our community with a crisis. The crisis that I'm referring to is the massive traffic that has been occurring on Ballard rd. This street is in the middle of three schools a elementary school and a Jr high and a high school prep for boys school, also two nursing homes and a daycare center. During recent months and years we have had many accident's on this street, several being fatal. The intersection of Ballard and Western is the worst, it's where a lot of the accidents occur. Also a lot of people speed on this street, and disregard the school zone speed. This street also lacks proper sidewalks for the school children. A portion of a "sidewalk" (dirt and grass) area that people use as a sidewalk is unsafe.During winter months when it snows kids and adults use the side of the road, because that dirt patch doesn't get plowed or salted. The side walk that is their is worn, uneven, has high curbs which is not handicap friendly. It's difficult to use when on a bike, wheelchair with a stroller or walker or even a personal grocery cart. My concern is that this street is so busy and we don't have proper sign's that are placed in proper spots to inform people about school zones. Also their should be signs that say no shoulder riding which is another factor to the accidents. We also need sidewalks that provide the children and elderly a safe way of reaching their destination. Possibly a rail or a barrier that protects the walking pedestrians from the traffic . I'm asking for stops signs at the crossroad of Ballard and western, making that a 4 way Stop intersection. Also a radar speed detector, that would enforce the speed limit on the drivers or at least make them aware. Please help me with this situation. All I'm asking for is support and a signature. Thank you
