Commute North Carolina's Death Row Inmates to Life In Prison

  • by: Liz Emery

Bev Perdue only has 2 more months as our governor here in NC.  As she steps down in January and hands the reigns over to Republican Pat McCroy, we are afraid executions here in North Carolina will fastly start back up, creating a virtual blood bath.  Bev Perdue has nothing to lose by commuting all sentences to life before she leaves office at the end of the year.  This will save taxpayers so much money that can then go to programs to help assist murder victims' families.

Dear Governor Perdue,

We the undersigned call on you to commute the sentences of North Carolina's death row inmates to life without parole. The death penalty is an undue financial burden on the State of North Carolina that costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars while offering little to no closure for the families of victims. Capital punishment is a highly inefficient, emotionally-charged, and wasteful system that North Carolina cannot afford.

Please spare our great state cuts to vital public services like education and health programs by balancing the budget with money saved from the high costs associated with the death penalty. We believe that ending the death penalty would save North Carolina more, and offer more long-term humanitarian benefits, than cuts to public services.

We ask you to lead the way for a North Carolina without capital punishment before you leave office at the end of Decmeber.  Bev Perdue, YOU can make the difference!

Thank you,
