Fine Ryan Lochte and teammates for Rio vandalism and cover up

Ryan Lochte and fellow US Olympic swimmers got drunk one night in Rio, vandalized a bathroom and tried to run away. They were caught and reluctantly paid for the damages. All that is bad behavior, but what they did next made it even worse. Ryan Lochte lied and said he was robbed at gunpoint. He told the press a total lie which made Rio look very bad, proving that he is an entitled privileged person.

At first, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and United Stated Olympic Committee (USOC) as well as the press were saying things like "boys will be boys" and they're just "immature". But these fully grown men vandalized property, then smeared an entire country in the press for their poor actions. This kind of press coverage and response from the Olympic community is the epitome of white, male privilege.

After a lot of bad press, Ryan offered a semi-apology, claiming he had just over-exaggerated the story. But the fact is that Ryan fabricated the story by pretending he didn't understand what had happened. In reality, he and his buds got caught doing something bad and lashed out about it.

Now, after the bad press, both the USOC and IOC have said things like what Ryan Lochte did was "unacceptable" and that he "let the other athletes down" and "let the US down". So now, we expect them to do something about it. Obviously, these bodies changed their tune once the public expressed frustration with what happened. This petition is to demand that both the IOC and the USOC fine Ryan Lochte heavily for his actions to show they truly disapprove of his behavior

Speedo has revoked their sponsorship of Ryan Lochte and we expect Ralph Lauren will to follow suit. But mostly we expect the responsible bodies (the IOC and USOC) to prove publicly that they will not accept this kind of behavior from athletes.
Update #17 years ago
Good news, Ryan Lochte has been suspending from professional swimming for 10 months. The IOC has still not fined him, but it’s promising that the swimming community is responding to his behavior and our calls for action. Keep sharing the petition!
