Outside of the West Campus Drive, intended for housing of Georgia College and State University students, there have been one too many car accidents. At any age, this intersection is very difficult. For college students, this intersection has been the main reason for many car accidents.

Not only are students driving 55 mph down the highway going either way, but trying to exit West Campus turning left is a major safety hazard. This left turn leaves students waiting for cars to stop zooming by only for a split second opportunity to go, leaving them sitting in the median until the next available opening to get on the main road. This causes a hazard for the driver turning left, the driver in a turn lane to enter West Campus or Magnolia Park, and the driver on the highway.

Turning right out of West Campus is also a safety hazard. While students only need to wait for an opportunity to go from one side of the highway, people turning out fast from Magnolia on the other side of the street has the potential to cause collisions, as well. This Hazard only worsens at night.

This intersection is very dangerous during the day, but a driver can communicate to other drivers through signals, hand motions, or "inching out" that they are about to go. When the sun goes down, however, this intersection is extremely difficult and heartwrenching. With head lights blaring from every direction, it is increasingly difficult to determine just how far away another driver really is. In addition to that, you can no longer see any signals that help drivers throughout the day.

For example, driving 55 mph down the highway at 9 pm, I am getting ready to make a left turn into the Village Apartments at West Campus. As I sit in the left turn lane, I see a copious amount of cars driving past me on my right, and driving towards me on my left. With the headlights on, it is difficult to gage how far away these cars are. So naturally, I wait until I know the coast is clear. Sounds easy, right? It is not easy, however, when there is a car with headlights sitting in front of Magnolia Park, anxious to quickly drive out to the median, and a car from West campus, anxiously waiting to turn left.

This is hazardous because I can't see incoming traffic if they sit in the median, they could crash if the go at the same time, and any hesitation would leave to cars being stuck in the center of the highway. If I decide the coast is clear to go, but either one of the cars also feels it is their turn, then we have another wreck in the making.

As you can see, this intersection is very dangerous, and I am sure that students would rather wait a longer time to turn with a signal arrow on a light than be in a car accident. Please sign this petition to demand a traffic light at this dangerous intersection. There have already been too many accidents in front of West Campus due to an inadequate four-way intersection. Lets not wait for the next one to make a change!
