We the people of the West Side of Oahu who must travel the Farrington Hwy route to reach their employment locations, educational facilities, medical facilities, and any other destinations demand a change. The roads must be repaired, opened , made a visible and most of all safe. The current conditions of Farrington through Waianae, Nanakuli, Maili and surrounding areas, are dangerous, highly congested and neglected. I live in Waianae, in the Nanakuli Maili point area. I have been trapped at home due to accidents where I am unable to leave my neighborhood. Today for example there was a 5 car collision near Nanakuli park, closing all lanes of Farrington hwy. I was unable to leave for work making me 2 hours late. Two blocks from my home is a road, designated as an emergency access road that would potentially enable me to go around the affected area. The gate remained locked for the morning. With the solar farm construction complete there is no reason to keep the road closed. Access to it will ease some of the congestion on Farrington and give another route out of the Sea Country housing area. There is a fear that in a severe emergency, that residents really would not be able to access this road.
Another issue is the lack of center turn lanes, constantly tieing up traffic with cars waiting to turn left. A center lane allowing turners to get out of the flow of traffic would greatly ease congestion.
There are a lot of military families and service members in our area that commute to Schofield Army base. If they could travel up Lualualei Naval Road to travel via the pass that is available, that also would diminish the traffic flow in and out on Farrington hwy.
The schools that are on Farrington hwy cause considerable congestion and hazards with people turning across traffic to enter and exit the grounds. Again a turn lane is needed as well as officers to direct traffic during drop off and pick up hours.
Crosswalks, there are many, which is great but you can't always see people because of the four lanes. Lights in the crosswalk that flash only when someone is in the crosswalk would make the roadway much safer for the walkers and easier for drivers to be aware they are there.
