California, Don't Send National Guard Troops to the Southern Border!
- recipient: California Governor Jerry Brown
Donald Trump just signed a proclamation requesting southern border states to deploy the National Guard to the Mexico-United States border -- all to "protect" us from people seeking safety and asylum in the U.S.
Trump's plan is as unnecessary as it is costly, and I for one will not stand for this. As a California resident, I value immigrants and asylum seekers and wish to welcome them -- not meet them with military presence.
Governors in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas have already indicated that they will comply, but Governor Jerry Brown is still undecided. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is reaching out to Governor Jerry Brown about Trump's plan to "secure the border," and we must make our voices heard before he makes a decision.
Even though Trump hasn't approached other states yet, Oregon's governor has already spoken out against Trump's plan. Governor Kate Brown said she would refuse to send the Oregon Guard if asked. This is the kind of leadership, representation and precedent-setting we need Jerry Brown to show for California.
Californians already rallied and protested when Trump dared step in our state last month. Now we must make it even clearer that California will not blindly go along with ridiculous immigration policy moves like this one.
We don't need a wall and we definitely don't need to militarize our borders. Please sign my petition urging California Governor Jerry Brown to represent California values and reject Trump's order to deploy the National Guard to the border.

Update #14 years ago
Bad news: Governor Jerry Brown agreed to send California National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. However, there's still a small window of time before troops are officially deployed. If we get more people to sign this petition, we can show Governor Brown that he's made a terrible mistake by siding with President Trump. Please share the petition for one final push to try and change Governor Brown's mind and keep military off our borders.
