Republicans have been fear mongering for years about the dangers of "voter fraud," culminating in the most absurd lie — told by Trump himself — that millions of "illegals" cast votes in the 2016 election. Despite these blatant falsehoods, an actual instance of fraud has finally emerged, and it is, of course, on behalf of the Republican Party.
News outlets have retracted their calls that Republican candidate Mark Harris won North Carolina's 9th congressional district. Harris was leading by 905 votes over Democrat Dan McCready, but recent developments in Bladen and Robeson counties have thrown the results into question.
The bipartisan North Carolina Board of Elections unanimously agreed not to certify the election results, and then voted again 7-2 to hold another hearing on December 21, citing "unfortunate activities." Per media reports on several affidavits, those activities included Republican operatives going door-to-door to collect unsealed absentee ballots, fraudulently requesting ballots on behalf of voters, and even filling out those ballots. All of this is clearly illegal.
Even worse, Harris "won" 61 percent of the absentee ballot vote in Bladen county, despite the fact that only 19 percent of absentee-by-mail ballots were cast by Republicans, 39 percent were cast by independents, and 42 percent were cast by Democrats. In other words, Republican candidate Mark Harris would have had to sweep every Republican vote, every independent vote, and even a handful of Democratic votes to reach his supposed 61 percent margin.
Not only must there be a new, fair election, but the operatives named in the affidavits must face the most severe of consequences. There is nothing more despicable than undermining our elections, the foundation of our democracy. Those responsible must serve no less than the maximum penalty for their actions.
We, the undersigned, demand that a new election take place immediately so that the will of the people of North Carolina's 9th district can finally be heard.
