Separating Parents and Children at the Border Is Cruel and Racist

In February, Mirian and her 18-month-old son arrived at the Texas border, hoping to find refuge after fleeing political violence in Honduras. Instead, border agents put Mirian's son in the back of a government car and drove him away as Mirian and the boy both cried. Months later, Mirian has still not been reunited with her son and has only heard updates about him through a case manager.

Unfortunately, this has become much more common since the Trump administration announced a new "zero tolerance" policy to aggressively prosecute every person caught crossing the border without documentation, giving the U.S. government legal grounds to strip children from their parents once the parents are charged.

Please sign this petition demanding that the Trump administration rescind this unnecessarily cruel policy now.

As a result of this inhumane policy, more than 2,000 children have been separated from their families. These children are being housed in overcrowded juvenile detention centers, with no idea if they will ever see their families again.

The new family separation program has been widely panned by human, children, and immigrant's rights organizations as extraordinarily cruel and possibly illegal. But that hasn't stopped the administration from going forward, and the stories are horrific.

  • One mother says authorities ripped her baby right out of her arms while she was breastfeeding her child at a detention center.
  • In another case, a father, so agonized after authorities separated him from his children, took his own life.
  • And in recent leaked audio released by ProPublica, children in a detention facility are heard crying and sobbing for their missing parents while border officials crack jokes.

We must stop the Trump administration's racist efforts to dehumanize and torture migrants seeking refuge from violence. Please join in demanding an end to the cruel practice of separating parents and children at the border.
