Make Florida Scrub Jay Florida's State Bird Now!

Florida is one of the "birdiest" states in America, with over 580 species reported, according to eBird. Some of the most exotic and classic southern birds call the State home. However, So do 20 million people as well, many of whom do not understand or appreciate the natural wonder that they live in. It's important to make sure that the population is educated about the nature surrounding them, so that we do not just celebrate Florida as a party state to go on spring break, but also the biologically rich heritage that is threatened by human encroachment.

One way we do this is by the Representative State Bird. However there is a problem. The current State Bird of Florida is Preposterous! It is the Mockingbird. I love the feisty little Mockingbird, but it is a poor representative of Floridian Wildlife! There are many, many others that would be preferable. However, an obvious replacement stands out: The Florida Scrub Jay. The Scrub Jay is the only bird endemic (found exclusively in) the State. It also happens to be Endangered. If we can make the Florida Scrub Jay the Official Florida State Bird, we can help raise awareness of the plight of the species. No one wants their State Bird extinct, and if you sign this petition, we can help ensure the Safety of these fascinating Birds for the Future.

Florida is not alone. There are many other states that need to change their State bird (including Texas, Kentucky, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Vermont, California, and many others.) Check out the other State bird Petitions if you support better State Birds. Please share this with your friends so this can become a reality! Join me in Starting this important change!
