Petition to stop closure of The Shield newspaper (1967)
Dear Colonel Joseph Oldford, 22 Wing Commander,
It is with deep concern and disappointment that I write to you regarding the recent cessation of publication of The Shield, the esteemed base newspaper of 22 Wing North Bay published since 1967, with its final issue released in April 2025. I understand that difficult decisions must be made, but I implore you to reconsider this decision to close a truly historical and vital military publication.
For many years, The Shield has served as more than just a newspaper; it has been the very pulse of 22 Wing. It is a cherished tradition, a tangible link to the base's rich history, and a comprehensive record of the activities, achievements, and personnel that define our community throughout the year. To lose The Shield is to lose a significant piece of our identity and heritage.
Beyond its historical significance, The Shield plays a crucial practical role in disseminating information within the base community. It serves as the primary source for military news, keeping members informed about important events, policy changes, exercises, and the everyday happenings that shape life at 22 Wing. Without The Shield, a critical communication channel will be lost, leaving personnel without a centralized and reliable source of information about their own base.
Furthermore, in today's interconnected world, the virtual availability of The Shield has been invaluable. It provides a vital link for the families and friends of our members who reside far away, allowing them to stay connected to the lives and accomplishments of their loved ones serving at 22 Wing. This connection fosters morale and strengthens the bonds between the military community and their support networks.
The closure of The Shield raises serious questions about how military news and base event information will now be effectively communicated. Relying solely on internal memos or digital screens cannot replicate the comprehensive reach and archival value of a dedicated newspaper, particularly one with the established history and trust of The Shield.
Therefore, Colonel Oldford, I respectfully urge you to reconsider the decision to cease publication of The Shield. I believe that exploring alternative solutions, perhaps involving digital expansion, community partnerships, or different publishing frequencies, would be a far more beneficial course of action. Preserving this historical tradition and vital communication tool is essential for maintaining a strong, informed, and connected community at 22 Wing North Bay.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this important matter.
Sincerely,
A long time reader and fan of The Shield.
