The famous "Royal Family Dance Crew" of acclaimed choreographer Parris Gloebel and the Palance Dance Studio are charging dancers a $200 NZD or ($144.47 USD) to audition next week for the crew. Many professional dancers and the dance community are calling out how inappropriate this cost is. The recent post on Instagram has turned off comments after an aftermath of many calling out this behavior for what it is.
The following articles share that Parris Goebel's father and manager of The Royal Family Dance Crew, Brett Goebel, has charged for auditions the past 10 years and refuses to share how many dancers will audition or take down the rate.
Many argue that when one interviews for a job, they do not pay to interview. Hence, why should dancers be paying (especially during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC where the industry is suffering and many have lost work) to be auditioning for a job they may not even get?
This audition fee is a clear EXPLOITATION OF DANCERS, especially those traveling from out of town just to audition or missing work. Most professional dancers would not pay to audition, and they are not auditioning for a dance program or school in this case.
Ultimately, our call to ACTION IS FOR DANCERS WORLDWIDE TO:
-CALL OUT THIS BEHAVIOR FOR THE EXPLOITATION OF DANCERS
-WE URGE DANCERS TO BOYCOTT THIS AUDITION UNTIL THE FEE IS REMOVED
-WE QUESTION THE COVID PROTOCOLS AND PRECAUTIONS OF THIS AUDITION
-WE DEMAND THE ROYAL FAMILY DANCE CREW EXPLAIN WHAT THE AUDITION FEE MONEY WOULD BE USED FOR
-WE STAND UP FOR DANCERS EVERYWHERE WHO WILL NOT SUCCUM TO SUCH UNFAIR PRACTICES
-WE MOVE FORWARD IN NO LONGER ACCEPTING THE "PAY TO PLAY" PRACTICES FOR PROFESSIONAL AND TRAINED DANCERS WORLDWIDE
