This Right-Wing Pundit Wants Everyone to Fat-Shame People

Right-wing provocateur Candace Owens thinks we should fat-shame people. That's not a mischaracterization: it's exactly what she says.

Her latest video on the topic is entitled "Dear Plus-Size TikToker: Shame Is a Good Thing" on Facebook, and "You Should Feel Ashamed for Needing Seatbelt Extenders [on Airplanes]" on YouTube.

In the video, Owens rails against the very existence of fatness. She complains of the "dangers of fat acceptance" and claims that it's supposedly "good to feel shame."

This is a frightening and cruel suggestion. Spewing vitriol against other people because of their bodies is discrimination, pure and simple! Sign the petition to demand that Candace Owens takes back her hateful words.

Apparently, other people's body sizes are personally offensive to her. She can't handle that others might be willing to treat themselves with kindness or self-compassion. How dare they! Instead, she wants them to descend into self-loathing, suggesting that will produce a "desire to change."

Commenters on the Internet are pointing out - and rightly so - that promoting shame is actually what's dangerous. Extensive research has shown that shame brings on the very real and deadly threats of eating disorders, body dysmorphia, self-harm, and even suicidal behaviors.

Eating disorders plague approximately 28 million Americans, and they're incredibly harmful to both our bodies and our mental health. Body dysmorphia even affects young children, with 42% of girls in 1st through 3rd grades reporting that they wanted to be skinnier.

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD):
"Eating disorders are among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose. 10,200 deaths each year are the direct result of an eating disorder--that's one death every 52 minutes. About 26% of people with eating disorders attempt suicide."

So when Candace Owens says she is promoting fat-hatred and fat-shaming, what she's actually doing is promoting self-hatred, self-harm, and suicidal ideation.

This disgusting display of disrespect for her fellow human beings cannot be tolerated. Sign the petition to demand that Candace Owens retract her harmful words!
