UPDATE: On Monday, August 27 the Feds allowed Central Valley Meat Company to re-open its doors making this petition crucial! Please sign and send a message to all retailers that we will not support them if they support Central Valley Meat Company.
On Tuesday, August 21st Federal regulators shut down Central Valley Meat Company in Fresno, CA after receiving an undercover animal welfare video that was filmed from inside the slaughter house. The video promoted regulators to take immediate action in shutting down the facility and to begin an investigation.
The video shows, amongst other things:
· Workers bungling sick cows struggling to walk and even stand. Cows are shown bleeding and thrashing while workers repeatedly shoot them in the head.
· At one point in the video a cow is still conscious as it is loaded onto the conveyor belt by its leg for transport to an area where its throat will be slit.
· In another part of the video a worker appears to be suffocating a cow by standing on its muzzle.
Erica Meier, executive director for Compassion Over Killing said, “the horror caught on camera is sickening.” She goes on to say, “It’s alarming that this is not only a USDA inspected facility, but a supplier to the USDA.”
Brian and Lawrence Coelho who are the owners of the facility have hired a PR firm and released a statement that barely touches on the sickening revelations caught in the video. They are more concerned with letting us know that the meat from the cows is perfectly safe and that no recall on food safety will be issued.
The USDA has taken action to investigate this facility, but that is not enough. McDonalds, Costco and In-N-Out Burger have all suspended their relationships and purchasing from Central Valley Meat Company while the investigation takes place. But their only concern isn’t just the inhumane treatment of the cows; it is also whether or not the meat was contaminated. Let’s make sure they do not only suspend their relationships, but permanently cut off all future purchases and business relationship with this company for good. We as consumers have the opportunity to put places like Central Valley Meat Company out of business for good and to let all other slaughter houses know that the inhumane treatment, and pointless torture, of animals is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
Tell the USDA, Costco, McDonalds and the other retailers to permanently and definitely stop all future business with Central Valley Meat Company.
