FGC is a public health issue as much as it is a human rights and social justice issue. FGC has zero health benefits for women and the practice causes short and long-term health conditions for women, such as severe bleeding, infections, difficulties giving birth, and depression.
FGC is still practiced in communities in the US even though it is illegal! FGC is a social and cultural construct; not a religious practice.
Join African Immigrants Community Services (AICS) in taking the pledge against the practice of female genital cutting and educating your community about its negative effects!
______
AICS was incorporated into a 501c3 non-profit in 2007 by its current executive director, Mustafa Hassan, and other Somali refugees to meet the needs of East African refugees in the Twin Cities area. Since its inception the organization has continued to grow and develop strong working relationships with other community-based agencies, faith-based communities and government entities.
