Since children seem to be subjected to common injuries while playing on school playgrounds, schools in the New York area are considering banning all activities.  The Middle schools are putting an end to soccer balls, footballs and basket balls, which is absolutely absurd.  A select few schools are not even allowing games of tag and cartwheels without adult supervision.  Of course, it is understandable that we all want children to have fun without injuries but physical activity is imperative for their health!

Injuries are a part of childhood; a sign of a healthy, happy life.  Kids are very resilient when injured and, although you want to protect children at all cost, keeping them from having fun is like putting them in a bubble.  Recess is an important aspect of your child’s school day.  It helps them to regroup and release pent up energies that could affect their mental focus and attention span.  Children that can have just a few minutes of playtime during recess will help them to focus better in the classroom.

Common activities on the school playground during recess can help a child not only be physical but also discover their personal athletic passions.  Playing tag, for instance can be a precursor to track and field.  Cartwheels may be a precursor to gymnastics and most of us grew up doing so without any life-threatening injuries.  These New York schools like WMS have to just let kids be kids.  You can protect the children to an extent but stopping playtime on the playgrounds is causing ALL kids more harm than good.

Dr. Kathleen Maloney, Superintendent of Port Washington Schools – State Department of Education – Please do not consider taking fun and activities out of a child’s normal day.  Children require activities of fun, sports and normal playtime on the school playground.  The health department will attest to the fact that children need to engage in physical activity daily for mental and physical fitness.  You are not protecting the children but crippling them by removing their fun and necessary means of being a child.
