Demand to stop the closing Magnolia Ave N.E. 13th-15th Streets, Cleveland, Tennessee

Lee University is proposing to close off Magnolia Ave N. E., 13th -15th Streets in Cleveland, Tennessee.

There are over 100 senior residents who reside at North Cleveland Towers Apartments and there are many who still drive a car. Presently there are 1 1/2 private parking lots on the north side of the building which will be greatly restricted by any closure of the adjacent street. The residents have a hard enough time keeping Lee students away from our private parking already. This would affect any abandonment of right of way next to the North Cleveland Towers Apartment and cause navigation to be difficult for many who use Magnolia Avenue.

Many resident still take the bus which stops to pick them up at the covered drive-thru on the Magnolia side of our building. The bus would need to change its route should this street closure take place, which would put Sethra and Carta Bus and seniors at a disadvantage. In addition, the ambulances and the fire department answers all fire alarms at our building, approaching from two directions. Any closure of the adjacent streets would greatly limit this vital access.

The second and final vote is set for Monday, July 13, 2020, at the City Council meeting in the Municipal building located at 190 Church St NE, Cleveland, TN 37311. The work session is from 1-3 pm and the vote session is 3 pm.

If Lee University is planning to increase their parking due to increased student population, why can't they construct a multi-level parking garage on the empty lot at the corner Magnolia Ave and 15th Street. There is ample space behind the old Mayfield Annex to construct a parking lot or multi-level parking garage.
