Big Bird Got 'Vaccinated' Against COVID-19. Other Cartoons Should Follow Suit!

The FDA just approved COVID-19 shots for 5 to 11 year olds, a huge victory for an increasingly vulnerable age group, especially given the recent Delta variant. Sesame Street has been teaching children important, topical lessons for half of a century, and the show's most recent solution for helping kids grapple with this phase of the pandemic is a genius one -- Big Bird got vaccinated! This is just another example of the positive impact the show can have on its young viewers. Having more cartoon characters on television get vaccinated -- such as Dora the Explorer and Peppa Pig -- could spread the message to many more children that while getting the vaccine might feel scary, it is completely safe and the right thing for all of us to do.

In the United States alone, the COVID-19 pandemic has killed over 750,000 people -- but health officials estimate that the true death toll is much higher. After a devastating year and a half of losses, the news of vaccine approval for children should give us hope.

Vaccination has proven to be extremely effective at protecting people from the worst of COVID-19. Vaccinated people are not only significantly less likely to get infected, they are also far less likely to be extremely ill or hospitalized if they do catch COVID-19. Most importantly, the overwhelming majority of COVID-19 deaths and people with long-haul COVID-19 symptoms are unvaccinated.

On top of the mental, financial, and physical strain that this pandemic has had on U.S. adults, those with children have faced additional immeasurable obstacles. Navigating school closures, reopenings, and keeping their kids safe and healthy are difficult enough; trying to explain to a child what we're all living through is a herculean task.

Dora the Explorer and Peppa Pig have massive audiences, with millions of children across the country tuning in to learn from their favorite animated characters. Both of these characters should show kids around the United States -- in terms and voices that they have learned to understand and trust -- that getting vaccinated helps protect all of us, especially the most vulnerable.
