End Proposed Cape Fear Crossing Routes Through Residential Communities

We, the residents of Brunswick Forest and Mallory Creek, oppose the building of a highway that would run through our neighborhoods.

We understand that it is important to our state's economy to support access to the Wilmington port and believe that this can be done by choosing a route that will not devastate hundreds of residents in award-winning and bucolic master-planned communities that have been designed to preserve green space and promote a strong sense of community. A new route must be proposed in order to avoid impacting residential communities.

Building a highway through Brunswick Forest and/or Mallory Creek would involve years of construction activity. Substantial air, noise, and light pollution will accompany construction. Beginning with construction, the highway would separate sections of existing BF neighborhoods from the rest of the community, particularly for pedestrians and people on bicycles. After construction, trucks and other vehicles will be driving through several of our neighborhoods 24 hours a day, presumably at highway speeds. They would be carrying, among other cargoes, hazardous chemicals and fertilizers—two of the primary products handled by the Port of Wilmington. The highway traffic would bring elevated levels of air, noise, and light pollution into our community. Highway lighting would add to the light pollution.

Research shows clearly that these forms of pollution cause or are associated with serious adverse health effects.
