Give Pygmy Sloths Endangered Species Protection From Extinction

Please sign and share this petition worldwide in an effort to get scientists and the Fish and Wildlife Services to implement plans that will protect the endangered Pygmy Sloths. This animal is one of the rarest mammals in the world that is feared to be extinct in coming years unless something is done to protect their existence throughout the tiny Isla Escudo de Veraguas off the coast of Panama. Please help the endangered Pygmy Sloths.

The pygmy sloth's fate has been diminishing in the past several months and local zoos have been trying to export the animals from their habitats in Panama to the United States in order to conserve their existence and history. However, doing so has met with some opposition at airports where the animals would have to travel, returning them to their Isla Escudo. One of the animals died in the process, with the Animal Welfare Institute intervening on the behalf of the pygmy sloths.

Since this incident, the Animal Welfare Institute has been seeking to add this rare animal to its endangered species list. In doing so, any person or organization that requests the import of the pygmy sloth would be required to get a permit from the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the same process that is required for any other foreign endangered species. The United States or any other organization worldwide would then need to receive a permit first before it can be transported.

The FWS is working towards the goal to get the pygmy sloth protected as it studies sloth’s population, ecology and threats. It can then declare if protection is warranted, which could kick off another 15-month process (at minimum) before any legal protections can be enacted, which seems so lengthy. We need to encourage Panama and the FWS to implement a plan that will protect the rare pygmy sloth in a timely fashion.

Panamanian government and the FWS - Thank you for your efforts but someone needs to implement a better plan in a more timely fashion that will protect the small but rare pygmy sloth of Isla Escudo de Veraguas off the coast of Panama. Their numbers are dwindling quickly, putting them in high danger of extinction. Add this rare animal to the endangered species list so that any person or organization that requests the import of the pygmy sloth would be required to get a permit, the same process that is required for any other foreign endangered species. We encourage you to protect this rare endangered animal in a timely fashion and preserve their existence and numbers.
