Ringling's announcement that it will phase out its elephant acts came just days after PETA received records proving that, at least since 2010, Ringling Bros. has had elephants test positive for the human strain of tuberculosis (TB). TB is highly transmissible from elephants to humans, even without direct contact.

PETA has caught the circus's abuse on video and released photos of its violent baby-elephant training practices to the world. The elephants forced to travel and perform with Ringling are chained inside filthy, poorly ventilated boxcars for over 26 consecutive hours on average—and up to four straight days—when the circus travels.

In a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection report, Ringling's elephant caretaker claimed that he couldn't provide three elephants suffering from painful and chronic health problems with daily veterinary treatment because he couldn't access them when they were confined to boxcars. Ringling has a lengthy history of animal abuse and neglect and was fined $270,000 by the USDA for dozens of violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act.

Three more years of tearing still-nursing baby elephants away from their mothers, forcing ailing and arthritic elephants to perform painful tricks and endure hours of traveling, and beating elephants with bullhooks and shocking them with electric prods in order to force them to perform confusing and unnatural tricks is too long.
