Portland Neighbors For Stronger Enforcement of Local Fireworks Laws

We are residents of Portland, OR frustrated by the persistence of illegal fireworks in our neighborhoods over the Fourth of July 2016 holiday weekend despite clear law banning their sale and use.

Fireworks dramatically increase the risk of fire and personal injury, create considerable and unnecessary stress for those living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and distress pets. They are also unequivocally banned under local law. Yet, local news affiliate KATU reports despite an estimated 1800 citizen reports of illegal fireworks to Fire & Rescue on July 4, 2016 alone a mere 70-80 citations were issued over the course of the entire weekend. That is unacceptable.

By signing this petition we ask, (1) the City of Portland to increase efforts to enforce existing law next year by considering options such as the creation of greater penalties for violations with the hope of deterring illegal behavior and funding greater enforcement actions, and (2) our neighbors to respect existing law and the negative impact of fireworks on our community.
