Pakistan: Protect Human Rights Lawyer from Murder Plot

A plot to murder a leading human rights activist in Pakistan has been revealed. According to trusted sources, Asma Jahangir is to be murdered by security forces. Her life is in danger and she must be protected.

As the human rights lawyer who established the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and AGHS Legal Aid, Jahangir became the first woman to lead the Supreme Court Bar Association. She is a known critic of the military, specifically with reference to legal proceedings during the Haqqani case and their policies in the Balochistan province.

Human Rights Watch has called for Pakistan to provide her with adequate protection and to investigate the threats. Ali Dayan Hasan, Pakistan Director (HRW) said "A threat against Asma is a threat to all those in Pakistan who struggle for human rights and the rule of law."

Tell Pakistani authorities to place the highest priority on protecting Jahangir, whose life is in danger at this moment.

We, the undersigned, support the calls by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch for action to be taken regarding the death threats received by Asma Jahangir.

The human rights lawyer must be provided with adequate protection and a full investigation in to the plot must be carried out. Furthermore, we believe that all those involved must be held to justice, regardless of their rank.

It is important for human rights advocates to be able to operate freely and safely within Pakistan. These are the people who will help to bring about reform and ensure that Pakistan can grow as a democratic society.

Thank you for your attention.
