With the United States rapidly approaching the debt ceiling, Speaker McCarthy has made it clear that he plans to hold the entire economy hostage unless the Biden administration agrees to catastrophic budget cuts to the social safety net.
Just what those cuts might look like was made clear when McCarthy released a budget proposal calling for an outrageous $4.5 trillion in spending cuts, including a 22% cut to the Veterans Administration, an end to Pell Grants for poor college students, end President Biden's student loan cancellation plan, repeal green energy tax incentives and cut $80 billion from the IRS' budget — which would cause the government to LOSE even more money — but not a penny taken from the Pentagon.

As if that wasn't bad enough, all McCarthy would give back is a one-year debt ceiling extension — so we can go through this whole preposterous standoff again during an election year.
President Biden correctly dismissed Speaker McCarthy's plan out of hand as "whacko notions," and all of Congress needs to follow suit. It would be devastating for the American people, and to hold our entire economy hostage for this deeply unserious libertarian fever dream is the furthest thing from responsible governance one will ever see.
