DEMAND SEAN M. O'BRIEN BE REINSTATED

PETITION TO IBT GENERAL PRESIDENT JAMES P. HOFFA TO REINSTATE EASTERN REGION VP SEAN M. O'BRIEN AS PACKAGE DIVISION DIRECTOR AND UPS NEGOTIATING COMMITTEE CO CHAIR
    General President Hoffa,

On September 6th 2017 you fired Sean M. O'Brien from the position of Package Division Chair and co-chair of the UPS negotiations committee.

Mr. O'Brien is, as you well know, the President and Principal Officer of Local 25 in Boston, MA and Secretary Treasurer/Principal Officer of Joint Council 10 of New England. He has been a Teamster since 1990. You appointed him as Director of the Package Division approximately 6 months ago knowing that the UPS contract was up for negotiations.

It is no hidden secret that you faced significant opposition in the last Teamster election. The vote amongst UPS members mainly went to the opposing slate. But in case you weren't aware:

    The IBT election is OVER.

Your slate (including Mr. O'Brien) won. It was time after the election to heal wounds and work TOGETHER as ONE UNION to go about the work of representing the members.

Unfortunately, you've allowed your personal feelings to interfere with sound decision making for the benefit of all Teamster members and particularly those at UPS by removing Mr. O'Brien as the Package Division Director.

For example the last edition of the Teamster Magazine was labeled UNITY; but yet it was heavily photoshopped eliminating DULY elected officers who were on the slate that opposed you. This did not go unnoticed and was certainly not a display of UNITY.

Mr. O'Brien saw the election results and realized that we have a deeply divided membership in this Union. So, instead of playing politics with the UPS contract to the detriment of the members, he asked everyone on both sides of the fence including former political opponents of his AND yours:

"What can we do to unify our Union and achieve the BEST CONTRACT for OUR MEMBERS at UPS."

That alone speaks volumes about the courage and conviction of Mr. O'Brien. That is a leader.

With this move, you've shown UPS and every corporate bully that our Union IS divided. You not only stabbed someone who stood by you in the back, you are portraying to the world the very definition of animosity and petty politics at the expense of the members who pay YOUR SALARY.

Make no mistake, the UPS contract affects THE ENTIRE LABOR MOVEMENT!

This upcoming contract will set the tone and trend. Union membership has been on the decline everywhere. Smart decisions and SOLIDARITY are key to beating back corporate bullies and their political puppets who would love to see unions destroyed.

With less than a year till contract expiration, it is foolish to replace the head negotiator who's laid all the groundwork for a successful contract.

We urge you to look at the many great things Sean has done for his members as the leader of Local 25 and Joint Council 10 not to mention the community in and around Boston and New England. He sets the tone, he listens to his members, he takes corporate bullies on when it is necessary to get what is best for his members.

Please do what real leaders in Unions should always do:

    LISTEN TO THE MEMBERS!

Work in OUR best interests and not just the interests of you and your political allies.

We the undersigned members of the IBT are demanding that Mr. Sean M. O'Brien be reinstated as Director of the Teamsters Package Division

    Fraternally Yours,

    The undersigned
