Improve Road Safety on A58 in Triangle

On Monday 4th December 2017, there was a serious collision between vehicles travelling on the A58 at Triangle. This resulted in very serious injuries to a child on their way to school.

Importantly, this was the third accident within a week or so to occur at Triangle, on this stretch of road. It is surprisingly commonplace to see accidents here, and whilst many are superficial, there is the potential for very serious ones, such as this.

It seems increasingly important that attention is given to alleviating the problems of poor road safety in Triangle, before further serious accidents occur.

Sign now to demand urgent action to prevent further serious accidents.

The problems are manifold:

  • narrow stretch of road
  • on an incline
  • sharp bends
  • often cars are speeding: the 30mph zone starts exactly where this crash occurred and many do not adhere to it
  • there is poor parking for children attending Triangle school and the private day nursery meaning many cars are parking on the road/pavement
  • lots of large and heavy vehicles use this route to get to the motorway
  • there is a pedestrian island in the midst of this, which further narrows the road
  • it is not that obvious that you are entering a residential area when arriving at Triangle; often people put their foot down after the viaduct in Sowerby Bridge and don't expect to slow down until Ripponden, especially non-local or through traffic.
  • there are several roads off this stretch of road, which are all well-used especially during peak periods.

Suggestions may include:

  • replacing the pedestrian island with a zebra crossing as a visual aid to encourage slowing, but also to improve road crossing and conditions for cyclists and other road users
  • making the area a 20mph zone
  • more obvious signs that there is a school and nursery in the vicinity
  • better signage
  • enforcing the speed limit via speed traps, cameras etc
  • improved parking facilities
