Save Our Libraries! Strong Minds, Strong Communities, Strong Wichita

We love our public libraries in Wichita - and we demand funding to continue for ALL of our libraries in this city. We believe that preserving our library system helps to promote strength in our children, neighborhoods, and city. It has been proposed that both the Evergreen and Linwood branches of the Wichita Public Library be closed. We feel this is a huge mistake for our city, and could signal a troubling move to devalue libraries across the city.

Libraries strengthen local economies:
- 73% of public libraries assist patrons with job applications and interviewing skills
- 68% help patrons use databases to find career openings
- 48% provide access to and assist entrepreneurs with online business information resources

Libraries create healthier communities:
- 77% of public libraries offer online health resources
- 59% provide programs on finding health insurance

Libraries are the place for lifelong learning:
- Public libraries in the US offer 4.3 million programs per year
- 95% provide online homework assistance
- Both of these branches offer summer reading programs for children

Library access equals opportunity:
- 100% of public libraries offer access to the Internet
- 90% help patrons with basic Internet skills
- 97% help people complete online government forms

Library and information services are vibrant institutions that connect people with global and local information resources. They provide access to ideas and creative works and make the richness of human expression and cultural diversity available to everyone.

Library and information services should be essential gateways to the Internet, its resources and services. Their role is to act as access points which offer convenience, guidance and support, whilst helping overcome barriers created by differences in resources, technology and skills. Wichita has a responsibility to assist ALL citizens in bridging this technological divide.

We, the undersigned citizens of Wichita, Kansas, request that the City of Wichita mayor, city council, and city manager revise the current budget proposal to restore full funding for the Wichita Public Libraries, for all branches.

Update #15 years ago
FYI that our petition is being taken to Wichita City Hall this afternoon - thank you for all of your support! There is still time to contact our City Council with your last messages of support for our libraries. Even though the Wichita Mayor has said publicly that he does not want the branches closed with this budget, there is no sure thing until the vote happens!
