Tell Kansas Legislators: Reject unnecessary discrimination against trans students!

  • by: Sarah Rose
  • recipient: Kansas General Assembly

Kansas lawmakers have introduced bizarre and discriminatory bills very late in their session as a diversionary tactic away from their fiscal issues. The bills would have college students policing each other’s genitals in bathrooms for a bounty of $2,500. We cannot allow this kind of witch hunt legislation to even be heard!

Transgender students should not have to fear going to the bathroom because of their physical anatomy. The Kansas General Assembly should be promoting tolerance and understanding for trans youth - not making their difficult journey harder by legislating discrimination into law.

Besides the fact that chromosomal gender, anatomical gender and gender expression are all different things, trans folks are no more likely to harm others as anyone else. Meaning not only are these bills discriminatory and harmful, but they are also not effective at their stated purpose.

Some have even said that the bills are just a diversionary tactic away from the state’s fiscal problems. With only two weeks left in their session, it is reprehensible that these lawmakers would put transgender youth in harm’s way, just to avoid doing their job. These bills are irresponsible, uninformed and damaging to students and we have to stand up for equality and justice now!

Sign this petition today and urge Kansas to take a stand for transgender youth - not persecute them simply for living their truth.

BREAKING NEWS: The Obama administration just issued a statement today directing public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms matching their gender identity. The guidelines seek to ensure that "transgender students enjoy a supportive and nondiscriminatory school environment." But the fight for equality isn't over yet.
