Violence Against Non-Binary, Trans, and Intersex People in Europe Is Skyrocketing. The UN Must Act!

A new report has painted an alarming picture of the violence suffered by intersex people living in Europe. Intersex is the general term for anyone who was born with variations in sex characteristics, and also includes "people who identify as trans, non-binary and gender diverse."

The massive study -- led by the European Union's Agency for Fundamental Rights, which included nearly 2,000 people across 30 countries on the continent -- shows that intersex people are facing increasing discrimination, harassment, and assault.

Physical and sexual assault. Nonconsensual surgeries or medical treatments. Conversion therapies telling them that who they are is somehow wrong. These are just a few examples of the brutality that intersex people are facing at an escalating, terrifying rate.

And it's time the world's largest intergovernmental organization do something about it.

Since 2019, violence and harassment against intersex people has skyrocketed, particularly among trans and non-binary intersex people. Between 2019 and 2023, the number of people who reported discriminatory harassment had nearly doubled – jumping from 42%, an already shockingly high number, to a whopping 74%.

The report found that this rise in hateful violence is not random, but is linked to targeted online campaigns intended to spread vile hatred and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment through disinformation.

This has been on the rise in the last decade, and is explicitly intended to undermine diversity and equality efforts. And its results are devastating: "More than half of the intersex people surveyed, 53%, said they had contemplated suicide in the prior year."

The United Nations has an obligation to promote the human rights, safety, and dignity of all. One simple way to do this is to create World Intersex Day. By creating a formally designated day, the United Nations would be signaling a commitment to protecting intersex people and promoting awareness, compassion, and education that can counteract the hateful disinformation campaigns being waged online.
