Since the reversal of Roe vs. Wade, there has been growing concern that same-sex marriage is next in line to be targeted by the Supreme Court. Thankfully, the House of Representatives just passed a bill -- the Respect for Marriage Act -- that would recognize same-sex marriages at the federal level, keeping families together and safeguarding the freedom for anyone in this country to marry who they love. But before same-sex marriage is truly protected across the United States, the Senate must also vote yes on this vital bill!

Since 2015, same-sex couples have been able to marry in the United States, when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Obergefell v. Hodges. If Obergefell falls, this bill that awaits a vote in the Senate would protect marriage equality in the roughly 35 states that currently prohibit it. Obergefell v. Hodges is the only thing keeping LGBTQ+ marriage equality safe in these states, and the conservative majority of the Supreme Court has made it blatantly clear they intend to overturn the precedent -- which means the Senate must act fast to put reinforcements in place.
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has explicitly criticized same-sex marriage, and Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that Obergefell and similar cases should be reconsidered. Based on Alito's and Thomas' words coupled with the recent rise in anti-LGBTQ+ sentiments and law, it is likely that we are going to continue to see legal attacks against privacy, which could jeopardize many human rights laws in the US.
