Longtime kennel operator Barney O'Donnell has admitted giving his dogs testosterone over many years
and separately, was found to be faking vaccination records beginning in 2010 and throughout 2011.
In fact, the state has found that the veterinarian
who supposedly signed the dogs' records during this period was dead!
Kennel workers have been known to inject female greyhounds with steroids
to prevent them from going into heat.
This practice causes greyhounds to suffer.
According to industry handbook Care of the Racing and Retired Greyhound,
adverse side effects of malederived hormonal preparations include increased aggression,
increased weight due to water retention,
loss of vigor, and virilization as evidenced by "vulvar swelling, enlarged protruding reddened clitoris,
and a clear to cloudy mucoid discharge from the vulva that mats the hairs under the tail.
"In extreme cases, the genitals of female greyhounds can become so deformed and the condition so painful,
that surgery must be performed.
