GSUSA: Sewing is an important life skill and a fun hobby. Our Girl Scouts love discovering about the history of women in quilting, crafting their own crossstitch creations, learning how to fix problems like a lost button, and more. Sadly the only official Girl Scout badges on sewing have been retired. Although we can still earn it, the badges themselves are hard to find as they're in high demand even today.

Sewing by hand is a basic skill that girls should learn. It is a skill that they need to use at some point in their life. As important as STEM is moving forward, it is still important that girls know how to work with their hands. Sewing can be very therapeutic. Sewing can be calming and relaxing. Sewing provides an opportunity for girls to focus on a particular task, working on something small until it is done and feeling a sense of satisfaction and pride when it is done. Sewing can ignite creativity and become a outlet that gives confidence and satisfaction for creating something and expressing a girl's individual uniqueness. Sewing builds hand-eye coordination. Sewing keeps hands and brains busy. Working the brain to keep it alert and active.

Sewing badges are truly one of the most sought-after retired badges at every level. Adding a legacy sewing badge at every level is keeping with the STEM pillar that Girl Scouts is currently focusing on while also connecting Girl Scouts of today with the Girl Scouts of the past.

We urge you to bring back official sewing badges - Girl Scouts everywhere would rejoice!
