Walmart Should Raise the Minimum Age for Gun Purchases to 21

In the wake of the Parkland school shooting, it's becoming abundantly clear that the majority of Americans want to see action on gun control. Whether it's by taking assault rifles out of civilian hands, changing age requirements, or banning guns for animal and domestic abusers, Americans want fewer guns in public - and we are ready for our laws to reflect that.

While our lawmakers have been slow to take action on gun control, corporations have the power to step up in many ways. That's why we're asking Walmart to raise the minimum age for ALL gun purchases to 21.

Three years ago, Walmart banned the sale of assault rifles. The company claimed that the decision was based on dwindling demand for the weapons, not politics. Whatever the reason, it was a bold step and exemplified how corporations can lead the fight against mass shootings in America.

Unfortunately, Walmart sells a large assortment of other types of guns that still have the potential to kill on a mass scale. While the company does have several requirements (e.g. background checks, no felonies, no history of domestic violence, etc.) consumers must meet before purchasing a gun, it has not implemented a minimum age.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, 18- to 20-year-olds commit gun homicides at a rate nearly four times higher than adults 21 and older. Imagine how many lives could be saved if guns were unobtainable for that age bracket?

Walmart has a real opportunity to take a stand for public safety. Please sign this petition urging Walmart to implement a 21-and-over age requirement for all gun purchases.
