Utah's gorgeous Bears Ears National Monument isn't just America's newest national monument — at the moment, it might also be the most threatened.
President Donald J. Trump has ordered the largest reduction in national monument protections in history. He says he'll shrink Bears Ears by as much 90 percent and halve the size of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, another critical national monument in Utah.
The announcement is part of the administration's unprecedented national monuments review whose stated purpose is to expand drilling, mining, logging, and other exploitation of public lands for private profit.
We mustn't allow Bears Ear and Grand Staircase to be lost to an explosion of oil drills, mines, and logging roads.
If the Trump Administration prevails, massive tracts of vital habitat for rare bighorn sheep, elk, and a dazzling array of other wildlife would be lost if Bears Ears is gutted as planned. The natural beauty of Grand Staircase-Escalante Monument could be sacrificed to new mines and wells. And Navajo and other tribal interests may see their culture heritage bulldozed in the name of private developers' greed.
It's not too late to save these special place, but we need your help! We know that when people speak out, President Trump is capable of reversing himself. He did so recently when he restored a ban on the importation of elephant trophies. But to convince Trump, we will need to make as much noise as possible in a very short time.
Speak out for the wildlife and wild beauty of the one-of-a-kind places. Demand that president Trump reverse his position and restore Bears Ear and Grand Staircase to their previously established borders.
