Sturgeon are being needlessly maimed and killed by gill-nets on the Fraser River and its tributaries.
For far too long the unacceptable practice of gill-nets to harvest salmon has been incidentally entangling sturgeon at an alarmingly unacceptable mortality rate, with a substantial risk to driving these prehistoric fish into extinction.
This unsustainable, abusive practice needs to end now.
We call upon the Government of British Columbia and the Federal Government of Canada to end the use of gill-nets and enforce a sustainable practice to harvesting salmon, such as fishwheels or other ecologically friendly technologies. It is time to move forward with modern salmon harvesting techniques to eliminate sturgeon by-catch.
