Yes, I Support a Clean & Healthy Wissahickon Creek

The Wissahickon Valley is home to almost a quarter of a million people. In this highly developed area, water running off of roofs, driveways, lawns and parking lots picks up contaminants like motor oil and grease from automobiles, lawn chemicals, weedkiller, pet waste and other pollutants and washes them into local waterways. As a result, the Wissahickon’s sediment and phosphorus pollution levels far exceed federal Clean Water Act standards.

WATCH - A Healthy Wissahickon: We All Have a Part to Play

In January 2016, all 16 municipalities and four wastewater treatment authorities in the Wissahickon Watershed agreed to move forward in purposeful discussions about the Wissahickon Alternative TMDL (renamed the Wissahickon Clean Water Partnership).

The next step of this collaborative effort is to have all municipalities approve a proposed Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) to officially begin the Wissahickon Alternative TMDL plan. This on-going initiative allows our communities to be part of - Owning the Solution - for improving water quality.

The Wissahickon Clean Water Partnership offers national expertise with local solutions. Municipalities will gain the advantage of expert advice from the following: Pennsylvania Environmental Council, Temple University Center for Sustainable Communities, Environmental Finance Center, Montgomery County Planning Commission, and the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association. The full team will support the exploration of new watershed modeling, financial strategies, and implementation plans for the future.
