Demand VIA allow special needs children in strollers on bus

San Antonio has one daycare specifically for special needs children. Some parents rely on public transportation. Parents walk a couple blocks or further to go from daycare to bus stop. A parent may encounter construction/detours, tall sidewalks, and no crossing guard during the walk. VIA's stroller policy requires parents to remove child from stroller, fold up stroller, and place stroller in an area that is not blocking aisle. Also, keep child seated and quiet. No food, only certain cups allowed, and no loud noise (must use headphones) on bus. Special needs children might be verbal, nonverbal, mobile, nonmobile. They might exhibit behavior that others identify as inappropriate. Behaviors include running off, intense tantrums, and sensitivity to temperature, light, and sound. Many drivers and riders get upset and combative if parent is taking too long to enter and or exit bus. Some drivers get upset when a parent request to lower bus and release ramp. If the child is fussy and or moving around a lot, the driver and or riders may create a hostile environment by complaining and criticizing parenting skills.
