Checkmate

We here at SCCA believe firmly about advancements in academics, unity, accomplishments, and most importantly, faith. However, we the undersigned also feel as though SCCA and its program is lacking a valuable asset it once had: a chess team. There are people within these accomplished walls who have earned the respect in which the school deserves through various sports, such as basketball and volleyball. However, some kids may not be completely able to participate in such sports but wish to participate in further bringing the school closer to God’s glory. Some students have found that they have received skills from their Creator that involve a more artistic alignment. Luckily, SCCA’s program encourages art, choir, and other important additions to the core subjects. You may have noticed, however, that a chess team cannot be found on any of the aforementioned lists. Therefore, this petition has been brought to your attention.
Those who have signed respectfully request that a class for chess be added as an extracurricular to further use students’ talents to bring honor to our Father. Statistically, a recent study has discovered that physiologically, children who play chess as a class or sport in schools had over 30% more cognitive abilities, focus, and problem-solving skills. The leader of this study had this to say: “Chess trains logical thinking. It teaches how to make decisions, trains memory, strengthens will power, motivates children to win, and teaches them how to deal with defeat. It’s the only school subject that can do all of this.” Who could argue with such results?
The only issue of creating a chess team and/or a chess class would be the conflict of scheduling. However, upon collaborating, the undersigned have devised a solution. ____ has so boldly decided to take up the reins and has volunteered to coach and the classes and/or team practices would take place in 6th period on Mondays and Tuesdays. We have come up with a solution that seems to fit into most people’s schedules. In conclusion, a chess class and/or team would be an invaluable addition to our school. Your consideration for the addition of a chess class and/or team is highly appreciated.
