Save Our Southern Hairy-Nosed Wombats

  • by: Tammy Franks MLC

Across SA’s Murraylands over the last four years, Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats have been dying in their thousands.

Their population is being seriously degraded with illegal culling and burrow destruction having major impacts on the population.

We still don’t know all the answers, but we do know the Government have increased the number of destruction permits by 500% over the last five years and toxic onion weed has taken over the wombats’ habitat as native grasses have disappeared.The recent fires could be the final straw…

There is a better way though- we don’t want our Southern’s going the way of their Northern cousins.

It’s time to take action to Save our Southerns and to ensure we protect and preserve these wonderful and iconic animals now!

Dear Minister and Shadow Minister;

Please take immediate action to save the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat by:

o Raising penalties for illegal culling of wombats;

o Issuing a moratorium on legally-issued destruction permits;

o Funding emergency relief feeding programs until the wombats’ natural food sources can be restored;

o Protecting wombat burrows in law; and

o Supporting the work of the Wombat Awareness Organisation.
